Why CSR as the standard for doing business in the 21st century?

  • Companies that engage strategically with CSR adapt more easily to the changing environment. They are less subject to economic fluctuations. Because companies that engage in corporate social responsibility are demonstrably more efficient and more innovative.
  • CSR generates cost savings. For example, by reducing waste, through lower energy costs, a lower level of absenteeism and more efficient commercial operations.
  • CSR ensures that a company is a more attractive employer and CSR increases labour productivity. Employees consider it important that they can be proud of the company they work for.
  • CSR is worthwhile. There is growing market demand for responsible companies and products. Since 2010 even the government has only been purchasing from companies that can demonstrate their ability to comply with minimum sustainability standards.
  • CSR is good for the image of the company. Companies that actively engage with CSR have an edge with credit providers, subsidy providers and policy makers. It is therefore a good idea to communicate CSR activities.
  • CSR is necessary in the long term. We live on earth with more and more people needing more and more raw materials. A growing number of raw materials are becoming scarce. CSR offers solutions.
  • CSR may be a short-term need, where society no longer accepts that a company can continue with its activities. They can then no longer count on a licence to operate. This can for instance be seen in consumer boycotts, campaigns of social organisations or staff shortages. Companies that engage in corporate social responsibility are less vulnerable to campaigns and boycotts.
